An 85-year-old man died over the weekend after a shoplifting suspect ran into him while fleeing with stolen goods from a store in San Francisco, authorities said Monday.
The death marked the city’s fourth homicide in the past week.
Sami Batshoun of San Francisco was declared dead Sunday, according to the San Francisco medical examiner.
Batshoun was standing outside a store about 4:15 p.m. last Thursday near the intersection of Lombard Street and Columbus Avenue when the incident occurred, said Officer Robert Rueca, a spokesman for the San Francisco Police Department.
Garret Miller, 31, “came running out of a store with an item and in that process, pushed down the victim,” Rueca said.
Batshoun was knocked to the ground and badly injured. Officers arrived on scene and immediately transported him to the hospital, Rueca said.
He was pronounced dead three days later. Miller was arrested when the incident occurred, Rueca said. He was booked at the San Francisco County Jail.
Miller has been charged with murder by the San Francisco district attorney’s office, spokesman Alex Bastian confirmed Monday.
A series of homicides hit the city over the past week.
On June 4, Jevon Cael was killed in a daylight shooting in the Bayview. A man in his 20s was identified as a suspect, but no arrests have been made.
Three days later, Vanessa Palma was fatally shot, allegedly by her estranged husband, Robert Riley, 43, also known as Chui Chekele Riley. The 34-year-old woman was trying to leave a violent marriage when she was slain in San Francisco’s Mission Terrace neighborhood, family members said.
As of Monday, no arrests had been made and there were no updates in the search for Riley, Rueca said.
Four hours after Palma was killed, Jaime Poole, 21, of San Francisco was fatally shot in the Mission District near Cesar Chavez Street and Treat Avenue, police said.
Robert Salvador, 22, and Sandie Harden, 28 — who were also injured in the shooting — were booked into San Francisco County Jail over the weekend on suspicion of murder and conspiracy to commit murder, authorities said.
