Global retailer Walmart on Monday announced its partnership with outdoor-gear company Moosejaw to offer premium hiking boots, camping gear and outdoor apparel through a new destination on Walmart.com.
The new site, dubbed Premium Outdoor Store, will feature "thousands of items" from numerous outdoor brands like Deuter, Craghoppers and First Ascent by Eddie Bauer. Moosejaw will also sell its branded clothing, camping gear and jackets.
The plan is to have most of the inventory provided by Moosejaw then add more products over time, the companies said in a blog post Monday. However, the deal is an online exclusive as the items won't be available in Walmart stores, a spokeswoman told CNBC.
"We're introducing a completely new, outdoor specialty assortment that hasn't been available to Walmart customers in the past," Moosejaw CEO Eoin Comerford said in a statement. "It's kind of an honor, since this is the first time that Walmart is creating an online store on its flagship site curated by one of its acquired specialty retailers."
Walmart acquired Missouri-based Moosejaw for $51 million in cash in February 2017, six months after its $3 billion purchase of Jet.com. It currently has 11 locations including eight in Michigan, one in Illinois, one in Colorado and one in Missouri.
News of Walmart’s latest brand partnership comes as its rival Amazon has also been adding new brands to its online stores in efforts to broaden its customer base.
Walmart recently partnered with Lord & Taylor to offer high-end fashion destination on Walmart.com. Following that deal, the company announced a new apparel line with talk show host Ellen DeGeneres.
Walmart is the nation’s largest retailer and amassed total revenue of $500.3 billion at the end of the fiscal year in 2018, according to its website.
